Kalahari Storms

4/8/2013

Whilst camping with an international group of tourists, storm clouds gathered every evening closely followed by sanddune carrying wind condensing into blinding lightning, crashing thunder and rain which instantly drenched. Despite tents collapsing, everything damp and gritty, womens laughter rang.

Possibly the Rain Dance which had been scheduled for their last evening alerted the heavenly rainmakers to action! The Rain Dance itself was blessed with large drops and completed to a deluge.

Three of our KATS, and a cousin, helped with cooking, firemaking and general errand running. They worked hard, were reliable and fun. I am totally enamoured and proud of their participation.

The Kalahari had been hot and dry to the extreme. Tensions mount and sadly solace is often sought in western dominated ways rather than ancestral.

Leaving for the Kalahari tomorrow

Exciting news! Tirkies will be on his way to !Khwa ttu at the beg of March, thanks to his sponsor and !Khwa ttu for making this possible.
Today I went school uniform shopping for one of the girls who has not been able to get to Upington (400ks round trip). The prices have shot up. I spent R1,000.00 just to get the summer basics. The young shop assistant who helped me really got into the spirit of the shop, once I had told her the background, so we have a few extras - hair accessories and toilettries. She was blown away by the thought that the nearest PEP was 200ks from the recipient.
This afternoon I visited Vulamasango Orphan Project in Phillipi  where I am a board member, with a client, who is a TEFL teacher. The outcome is that Lize  has volunteered to teach English to the Vulamansango youngsters who sorely need such help.

The KATS Kids are, bar one, all ensconced at school. The boy who is not at school this year failed last year as he was ill and missed and chunk of schooling. He is awaitng confirmation to join !Khwa ttu as a volunteer with the aim to enrol on their very excellent Community Training programme next year.
The Kalahari School project's Wendy House is presently being renovated and will hopefully be ready by the end of next week. with tempratures reaching well over 40centigrade insulation will hopefully make teaching and learning there a more
managable experience.
I will be accompanying the Kalahari School Project donors to the Kalahari from the 24th -28th January. Whilst there I'll visit all the Kats Kids to make sure they are settled and have all they need to begin the school year. 5 of them are at school in Upington, 2 at school in Askham and 1 in Cape Town.

The last trip to check on the school project as well as the Kids in KATS  at the end of last year, besides being very hot, was very rewarding. We had a fun end of year party for the littlies and their parents, who participate in the Reading and MiniChess programmes. Milton, one of the Nursery School teachers, baked delicious cakes and cup cakes. The parents were all enthusiatic about the progress their kids are making and the improved results those at school are getting.
Thanks to Charmiane, our dedicated teacher, we all admire your perseverance and dedication under often difficult conditions.
The uninsulated and broken Wendy House which houses the project, is finally under repair thanks to Ingird and her teams' fundraising in Bristol.

I managed to see most of the youngsters in KATS. We had a catchup lurking from the heat on the veranda at the Lodge. They are a lovely bunch, I am really fond of all of them. Three are going to school in Upington for the first time this year which means that we will now have all but one of the Kalahari Kids at school there.
In Cape Town Ntombi has a very few modules left to complete before she becomes our firstUniversity graduate, her younger sister who is our other Cape Town recipient looks set to follow her sister's success.

The next trip will be at the end of January when I accompany our Kalahari School sponsors, Agneta and Anders Johansson, to show them the fruits of their much appreciated support for the programme.
I also hope to see all the KATS Kids to see how weel settled they are and to make sure they have everything they need for school.

Oh high, swing low

Oh shine!

Oh high, I see the diamond cluster

Deep and slow

The light fills my body

deep and slow

I feel it rise

My stomach explodes  with light

as you do

Oh high

I am gone from earth

I fly

The moon on my wings
